The devil ascended and Jack immediately carved a cross into the tree trunk. So the devil was trapped and could not come down. So he begged Jack to release him an for ten whole years. Then Jack set him free.

That's why every Halloween, the Irish carve radishes, potatoes and pumpkins, put in a candle and place them near windows to keep away evil spirits and especially the stingy spirit of Jack.
