NESTOS RIVER

The Nestos River is one of the five largest rivers in Greece. While its stream delimits the borders between Macedonia and Thrace and the prefectures of Kavala and Xanthi, having first crossed the prefecture of Drama. The river Nestos, according to Herodotus, became the northern limit for the spread of lions in Greece. Today 300 species of birds, 30 species of predators, 11 species of amphibians, 21 species of reptiles find shelter or food, while several species of fish live in the lagoons of the delta.
