Football is one of the most successful and well – known sports in Greece. Football features two teams playing against each other. The league was formed on 16 July 2006 and replaced Alpha Ethniki at the top of the Greek football league system.It consists of 14 teams and runs from August to May, with teams playing 26 games each followed by a 10-game play-off to decide the champions. UEFA Euro 2004 marked a high point in Greece’s football history when they were crowned European champion in only their second participation in the tournament.
